1. Rugs & Mats – It all starts at the front door

Christmas carpet cleaning tip number one starts with the old adage “Prevention is better than cure”.  You want your guests to bring you goodies & gifts, not dirt & debris from the street!  The best way to ensure the guests come in but the dirt stays out is to place mats at all entrances to your home.  It may even be a good idea to lay some rugs and runners down in high traffic areas to ensure all the extra foot traffic does not damage your carpet.  Keeping your paths and porches well swept at this time of year helps too!  Aside from making your place look better, it will also mean dirt and leaves don’t blow in every time you open the door to welcome a new guest.

2. Vacuum – Suck it up!

Vacuuming is an extremely important part of Christmas carpet cleaning.  Not only for the dirt you can see, but also the dirt you can’t see! Dust and grit trapped between the carpet fibres is quite abrasive and causes damage to the carpet. Foot traffic on carpet filled with grit, will cause permanent damage to carpet by scratching the fibres and making them dull looking.  This type of wear and tear cannot be reversed by carpet cleaning.  We highly recommend you step up your vacuuming routine over the busy holiday period.  Vacuuming both before and after guests will ensure carpet does not look prematurely old and worn (wish it was that simple for me!).

3. Spills & Stains – Don’t delay..

Attend to spills and stains immediately! Do not wait to clean them or you may just find you are left with a permanent reminder.  Whatever you do,  DO NOT use store bought carpet cleaning products – they often contain bleach which can permanently damage your carpet.  Don’t be a Scrooge when it comes to stain removal, or you might just find you are permanently reminded of  Christmases past! What you CAN do is contain the spill with paper towel or a cloth and remove excess solids.  You can clean many food and drink stains yourself, however, always consult a professional carpet cleaner for advice before attempting stain removal.  We are available all holidays for Christmas Carpet Cleaning help and advice over the phone.

4. Christmas trees – Real trees need care

Nothing says Christmas more than the smell of pine.  Nothing says Christmas carpet cleaning disaster more than dead pine needles all over the carpet!   If you choose a real Christmas tree, keep your tree well watered to ensure it does not drop its needles.  However don’t water it so often that you flood your living room or that will be a whole other disaster! Make sure your Christmas tree is securely weighed down in the water so that it does not topple over and cause water damage – especially if you have pets or small children. I will never forget the Christmas our cat climbed the Christmas tree……

5. Upholstery – The sofa and the spare bed

Once you have your carpets looking their best, spare a thought for your hard working couch and dining chairs.  They will be getting a lot of use over the holidays and will probably need a good clean either before or after the festive gatherings.  Then there is the spare bed – is it guest ready?  We can clean all of your mattresses to remove dust mites and other unwanted bedfellows!
